The social fabric of Uganda, like many African nations, is already stretched to the breaking point. Unless help comes, another generation may be lost.
Your pledge of $35 a month will sustain one child.
Other donations will be used for general support or for long-term projects, which include: construction of a much-needed girls’ dorm and security fence, digging a well, buying mosquito netting, purchase of a bus, and development of a library.
Keeping this project running has always been a balancing act, with no certainty that needed resources will be available. For example, the World Food Programme and the International Labour Organization have offered short-term funding and/or emergency food, but no guarantee of long-term support.
A cow and some goats, donated by American school children, have improved the childrens’ diet and provided a small cash income. UMOP is working toward sustainability, but that seems a distant goal. For now, the futures of these children depend on the support of donors in the developed world.
A pledge of $35 per month per child would do the following:
-
Improve the children’s diet. They now eat mostly maize meal and beans.
-
Open the doors to more children. The Center could help another 200 children right now, but has hesitated to make commitments it may not be able to
honor.
-
Add to and stabilize the medical services (including education on reproduction and HIV/AIDS) available through the small dispensary.
-
Provide a steady income, which in turn would allow better planning and budgeting.
